His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada appeared in a family of pure Gaudiya Vaisnavas in 1896 in Calcutta. -
At twenty-six, he met his eternal spiritual master Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura (Founder-Acarya of Gaudiya Math). -
He took sannyasa in 1959 after retiring from household life.
At the age of seventy, armed with karatals and a crate of Bhagavatams, Srila Prabhupada set off to America in 1965 on the steamship "Jaladutta" and reached New York City.
In Manhattan, Srila Prabhupada struggled through the icy cold snowbound winter of 1965. He continued writing and occassionally selling a few Bhagavatams.
In nearby Tompkins Square Park, Srila Prabhupada led the first public chanting of Hare Krishna in the Western world. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada came to New York in 1965 and in twelve short years made the chanting of 'Hare Krishna' known throughout the world. He started a spiritual revolution wherein devotion, simplicity and compassion became the direction for living. Coming from a lineage of self-realised teachers, Srila Prabhupada gave a fearless exposition of devotional wisdom which had been kept locked within India for centuries.
The special position of Srila Prabhupada is that his appearance, mission and teachings were predicted by ancient sages and masters:
“My commander-in-chief devotee will spread the chanting of the holy names around the world.”

“Very soon a great personality will appear who will spread Krishna consciousness all over the world.”
― Bhaktivinode Thakhur [2], a great Vaisnava saint, in 1881
“After 5,000 years of this age have passed, the great sage and worshiper of my holy names will appear and spread the chanting of my names throughout the world.”

The spiritual master of Srila Prabhupada, recognising his scholarliness and devotion, instructed him to teach this philosophy in the English language in the West. Srila Prabhupada reached the shores of the USA in 1966. From poor beginnings in the Bowery, New York, he founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and successfully transplanted an ancient culture on Western soil, which has grown into a worldwide confederation of temples, farm communities, schools and institutes. His position as the pre-eminent acharya (greatest spiritual teacher) in recent times has been acknowledged by other great teachers, and will not be eclipsed (as predicted) by anyone at least for the next ten thousand years.
